Web Hosting - Assign A Static IP Address To A Website

Prerequisites

Active Web services, and purchased Static IP see Add Hosted Services.

Summary

This article will demonstrate how to associate a Static IP address with a website.

All customers have the option to purchase a Dedicated IP Address instead of using the shared IP pool. A dedicated IP address allows for a unique IP address to be exclusively dedicated to an organization's website. If the website will be accepting credit card payments, implementing SSL, or needs to consider Search Engine Optimizations, a Dedicated IP address is a recommended add on to any web site hosting package. Purchase a Dedicated IP address via, Add Hosted Services.

1. In a web browser navigate to the ITSolutionsNow services control panel:  https://cp.myhostedsolution.com/

2. From the center of the screen hover over the Web icon, and then select IP Addresses.

3. Click on Allocate

4. There are two options for static IP allocation, random, or selection from a list. Note that the random IP address pulls from within the available list. Pick one of the two options, then click Add.

5. Shortly the browser will return to the static IP page, listing the IP address now associated with the account. Write this IP address down as it will be instrumental to the steps ahead.

At this point the IP address is simply reserved for the account, but it is not tied directly to a website. This must be done manually by entering it into DNS, either via the control panel (if name servers are pointed to myhostedservice.net), or at the location of where DNS is hosted (external provider). The next few steps will detail how to change the entries to the reserved address inside the services control panel operating under the assumption that names servers are not pointed elsewhere.

6. On the left side of the control panel window will be a menu of available services and directories, click on Domains.

7. Click on the domain name that will be associated with the reserved static IP address.

8. Click on Edit DNS zone records.

7. DNS information will be displayed for the current domain. Look for A records pointing to 66.129.85.141 with the prefix of either:

  • *
  • www
  • A blank space, " ".

Those entries will need to be updated to the static IP address from step five. This is accomplished by clicking on the small pencil icon to edit the entries.

8. Replace the listed IP address with the Static IP address from step five. Repeat this process for the three mentioned entries, clicking on the Save button each time to update the record.
